FY 2026 Budget Announcement
The Town of Rutherfordton has released the FY 2026 Manager’s Recommended Budget, presenting a forward-thinking, community-driven financial plan to strengthen services, enhance infrastructure, and support long-term sustainability.
This year’s proposal includes a modest property tax increase from $0.47 to $0.51 per $100 of assessed value—an 8.5% adjustment that still keeps Rutherfordton below the regional municipal average. “Prices for basic capital items have risen sharply—a refuse truck that cost $234,000 in 2022 now costs $355,000,” noted Town Manager Doug Barrick. “This budget balances fiscal responsibility with the investments necessary to sustain high-quality service delivery.”
Barrick added, “By not settling for the status quo, we’re investing in a stronger, more vibrant future for everyone who calls Rutherfordton home.”
The proposal also includes an increase in the monthly curbside collection fee from $13.60 to $16.40, helping fund a new refuse truck and address rising service delivery costs.
Key FY 2026 Initiatives:
- Launching a dedicated Parks and Recreation Department
- Opening the Norris Recreation Complex
- Beginning construction on the Town Hall & Police Campus on Maple Street
- Taking delivery of a new 107-ft ladder truck and fire engine
- Advancing affordable and infill housing
- Installing the Overmountain Man public art statue
- Supporting the Community Garden and Redevelopment Commission
Additionally, over $5.42 million in state and federal grants will fund major sewer and water improvements—including upgrades to the wastewater plant and extension of services to the New Hope area—without requiring a utility rate increase in FY 2026.
“This budget is not just a financial document—it’s a roadmap to ensuring Rutherfordton continues to thrive as a safe, beautiful, and welcoming place to live, work, and play,” said Mayor Dancy. “We are proud to continue investing in the things that make this town special.”
