Community Development Director
Magnolia Long is a native of Western North Carolina. She graduated from UNC Greensboro in May of 2020 with honors, obtaining a BA in Political Science, Pre-Law, and a minor in ASL/Deaf Studies. After graduation, Magnolia decided that she wanted to redefine what it meant to move back “home.” She found an opportunity to do this through the Lead for North Carolina fellowship hosted by the UNC School of Government. This program introduced her to Rutherfordton in July of 2020, which soon became her new home in WNC. After completing her year-long fellowship, she was hired as the Community Development Director for the Town of Rutherfordton. She works hard to improve the lives of everyone around her by addressing housing needs in the community and co-creating the Ruff’ton Roots Community Garden. Her definition of community stretches far beyond the Town Limits of Rutherfordton, as she is also a volunteer firefighter with both Rutherfordton Fire & Rescue and Spindale Fire Department. She is also a Cystic Fibrosis fighter, and had a transplant in February of 2018. In the little free time she has, she enjoys spending time with her two dogs, off-roading, and doing DIY projects in her house.
